Try Steno!

Print an actual size shorthand machine keyboard chart, then try your hand at writing the words on this handout: Try Machine Shorthand.

The National Court Reporters Association is a great place to learn more about a career that utilizes shorthand machine technology. On their website you can explore the world of steno, take a quiz to see if court reporting or captioning might be right for you, and sign up for a FREE hands-on training with the NCRA A-Z Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand. The program is just a few weeks long and introduces you to the machine keyboard and writing single-syllable words. It’s a great way to see if steno is for you! NCRA Discover Steno

Project Steno promotes the stenographic court reporting/captioning profession through community outreach, with the goal of building a robust pipeline of students into school and graduating them in two years.

Project Steno offers a free six-week course that is very similar to the NCRA A-Z program (they were written by the same person). Basic Training is a free program as well. Sign up for Basic Training.
